Architect Joris Verhoeven chose hand-moulded bricks for the walls of this asymmetric gabled home in the Belgian village of Riel .
Verhoeven, who is based mostly in close by Tilburg, designed the two-storey residence, named RielEstate, for a contractor. The aim was to generate a home that puts a playful spin on the standard architecture of the region.
“My consumer, Jeroen Krijnen, was the builder of the home,” the architect told Dezeen. “Jeroen and his partner Marjel asked me to style them an interesting residence.”
“They are architecture lovers and asked for something traditionally created with reliable materials, but out of the ordinary.”
Standard handmade bricks had been picked as the principal creating material, sourced locally from within the Brabant area – the very same area that is property to MVRDV’s shop and workplace complex disguised as a farmhouse.

The building’s profile is much less traditional. Although it functions a gable, this is set at an angle so that the pitch is much steeper on 1 side than the other.
“An asymmetric sculptural play of mass and openness is created by tilting the roof ,” said the architect. “It is also an alternative for the standard roof form that is prescribed in the municipal rules for this district.”
Windows are stored as straightforward as feasible, somewhat set back from the walls with no header or sill details. Front and rear doors are created from oak, creating two prominent entrances.
“In the province of Brabant it is customary to enter through the back door,” said Verhoeven. “It is a sign of hospitality – you can come to feel totally free to come in, the door is always open for visitors.”
Within, the building’s kitchen and dining space are each found at the front, although the loved ones residing area open out to the backyard at the back. The staircase types a divider in between these spaces, and a garage runs alongside.
