Sleek Bedrooms With Cool, Clean Lines

A bedroom is a sanctuary. It is not only a place to relax and sleep, but it should be a beautiful reminder of order and style with every new morning. The bedrooms here, all visualized by digital designer Albert Mizuno, offer unique features, tantalizing designs, and are gorgeous reminders of everything a bedroom should be.

WhatWeDo Prints + Faunascapes

Plywood is trending at the moment in home interiors, have you noticed? That’s why I have to show you something very cool that I came across called WhatWeDo in the online shop of Lys Vintage, which I frequent on a regular basis since first meeting Simone (the owner) many years ago. I love the style of her shop because her interiors taste is really great and current — I get excited to see what she’s stocking next.

That’s why when I came across Copenhagen-based multidisciplinary design studio and product agency, WhatWeDo, in her shop before I had Aidan well I had to learn more. So I wrote to WhatWeDo and placed an order so that I could experience their products for myself.

This design duo is Hanne & Tobias Scheel Mikkelsen, with backgrounds in both architecture and graphic design, which is super apparent the moment you see their work. I love their posters – I have “Now” shown a few images above — and they also do these great designs printed on plywood called Faunascapes, and I have the fox on the hexagon because my little son’s “animal” has always been a little fox since he was born. When I get them up in my new work studio, I’ll show you how they look. I think the fox will end up in his room eventually though…

I love interesting art and when I find something that feels fresh and unique I get goose bump-y even still after all of these years of writing about interiors and products for the home. I come across so many thousands of things that often the sameness gets on my nerves but WhatWeDo is an inspiration because prints like these aren’t being done on plywood by a million companies already. It’s nice to still be able to find products that feel different and stand out from the pack.

Are you loving these too?

Let’s Go Shopping

Hey all! Happy Friday! I’m back with a little shopping excursion to one of my favorite stores. I like sharing spots that I think have great products and prices (and no, this is not a sponsored post!). I’ve shopped Cost Plus World Market for years now but I feel like it’s been over the past couple of years that they’ve really upped their game.

They have the same feel as Pier 1 — I just find the pieces to be a little more unique and different. It’s a place I like to walk through just to get inspired. I don’t buy something every trip there but I always walk away wanting to buy plenty. 😉

I had to return a few things yesterday so I took some pics as I walked through to show you why I love this place so much!

They always have beautiful rugs – I loved the shaggy diamond patterned one:

diamond rug world market

They have a great variety in the store and bigger sizes available online. That sheepskin rug is way cheaper at IKEA though. 🙂

I have so many dang mirrors, I don’t need another one. But both of these catch my eye every time I go in:

I’m always trying to figure out where I could put one!

Their signs and art are fun too – this one is for you if you can’t find an antique antique sign:

antiques sign world market

It’s really good size by the way.

These glass signs are super cute as well:

I’ve seen the pie one around blogland lately – love them both!

We have a few of their towels – they have the most colorful selection I’ve found anywhere:

towels world market

That’s one thing you’ll notice in this store – lots of COLOR. I love it.

There are a TON of decorative items throughout too. I loved this wood sconce:

World Market is one of the only places around (other than HomeGoods) that carries furniture you can actually buy and take with you. I got this foyer table a couple years ago:

high board and batten

I adore this table. I added the hardware to dress it up just a bit but otherwise it’s beautiful on it’s own. I love the look of the wood – it’s a natural tone with a little white wash. So pretty.

They have a huge drapery selection too:

But if you need anything longer than 84 inches you’ll have to shop online.

One of my favorite spots in the store is the lighting area:

knock off eldridge light lotus light fixture

That one on the left? It’s an exact replica of the Ballard Designs light – this one is bigger than the BD small version and \$50 cheaper.

One of my all time favorite purchases from WM is the chandelier over our kitchen table:

wood chandelier

I get asked about our kitchen chairs all the time too – those are also from World Market. If you are patient you can get their furniture on sale and they’re always sending out coupons too.

I LOVE their linens – I’ve not found a selection like this anywhere else:

kitchen linens world market

I used their placemats to make most of our outdoor pillows years ago:

WM also has a TN of kitchen and entertaining products:

mason jar beverage dispenser salad servers world market

I can spend a good 30 minutes just checking out all the cute items in that section alone.

World Market also carries a HUGE wine selection and tons of unique and worldly food options. It really is a fun spot to check out! I find their prices to be pretty reasonable and for bigger items I will try to wait till it’s on sale or I have a coupon.

Have you ever shopped this store? We only have one nearby but they do sell online as well. Have a GREAT weekend my friends!

Some Painting In The Family Room

I know to a lot of people it will seem pretty crazy and pointless so I won’t bore you with all my reasons for painting this room again. Ha! As I mentioned earlier this week. I rather spontaneously decided to repaint all of the trim, doors, windows in our kitchen/family room and back hallway and then also painted the walls. I had been thinking about doing it for a while but figured I would wait until after Christmas but then before I knew it I had started and then I couldn’t stop. I still need to do the cabinets in the kitchen but I can’t decide whether or not to go with white or a gray similar to the fireplace. And I can’t decided if I want to keep the fireplace this color or not either. I painted it Winter’s Gate (I think that’s what it was called) by Benjamin Moore. And for trim and doors I did the same as I did in the rest of the house, Simply White and Mopboard Black both in semi-gloss. And then I used Horizon for the walls. Although I am not sure yet about what I am going to use on the cabinets and am not sure about the fireplace (I am pondering keeping it but also pondering painting it black, or painting it white and the bricks a charcoal color…decisions, decisions) I have to say I am so incredibly happy about the trim and the doors. I have absolutely loved having the black doors in the rest of our house and at Jason’s and it feels nice to have everything all cohesive. And I know it’s hard to tell in pictures but in real life the white trim helps the ceilings not feel quite as low and the room feel a bit more spacious and light.

and yes, I’ve been playing around with the chairs… And I know there’s a million pictures of what it looked like with my first round of paint (which I did like! I just didn’t quite feel like me if that makes sense). But here’s a little reminder of what it looked like on move in day:

I’ve also been playing around with pillows which is why there are different ones in some of the pictures.

I’ve also got a plan for one of our new signs to go on that bare wall above the couch.
You can find the paint color info in the top of this post and a full source list for this room here.

I’ll show you more pictures of the wall with the chalkboard and sideboard and the pantry that is finally all neat and organized once the sun comes out again and I can take pictures in here. This room doesn’t get much natural light so it has to be a really sunny day to get any decent photos and it’s been raining and overcast here the last several days. And then of course once I finally decide on a cabinet color I share photos of that.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend.

Torsten Neeland's Creates Wooden Framework For New Yohji Yamamoto Collection

London Design Festival 2014: Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto presented his Spring/Summer 2014 collection on chunky wooden garment rails by product designer Torsten Neeland during the London Design Festival .

Torsten Neeland’s installation, entitled Urban Nomads, comprised a pair of wooden clothes rails and a range of hangers with cork inserts. They were used to display Yohji Yamamoto’s new clothing collection at the fashion designer’s store on London’s Conduit Street.

Yamamoto, whose work spans over three decades and was honoured by a 2011 V&A exhibition, based his Spring/Summer clothing collection on the idea of the “wandering nomad”, who reuses and dismantles their possessions as they move from place to place.

Neeland picked up on this theme by designing items he believes are “robust yet dismantle-able and aesthetically covetable”, and can be sustainably manufactured – addressing the the throwaway culture associated with the design industry.

“We were interested in how our lifestyles are becoming more transient due to technological developments and massive urban changes,” Neeland told Dezeen.

Named Urban Nomad 1 and 2, the two clothing rails are put together from jointed wooden poles. The rails can be constructed and disassembled without the need for tools and screws to allow for easy transportation and storage.

“We used materials such as solid oiled, stained maple, plywood and cork for the clothes hanging rails because these materials age beautifully and we would like to see these materials in a retail environment,” Neeland told Dezeen.

“It is about simplicity without forgetting about warmth and soul.”

A set of three wooden clothes hangers, designed by Neeland for Dutch cork manufacturer Corklook, are used to hang Yamamoto’s clothing. Two of the three feature cork shoulder pads that prevent clothing from slipping from the hanger, while one has a solid wooden outline.

Neeland approached Yamamoto after spotting his fashion campaign shot by photographers Nick Knight, Inez Van Lamsweerde & Matadin Vinoodh, Craig McDean and David Sims.

“I love photography and I like to wear Yohji Yamamoto. I contacted the Paris office directly and proposed the project,” he explained.

Earlier designs by the German designer, including cutlery set Stav, for which he received the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, and a moulded cork tray were presented alongside the new pieces.

Urban Nomads was curated by Nuno Coelho and was also presented as part of Paris Design Week. Neeland and Yamamoto also collaborated on a film and imagery shot by fashion photographer Thomas Krappitz that accompanied the exhibition.
