Elegant Kasokudo Bonsai Planter Inspired By The Automotive Industry

A striking fusion of form and function, the Kasokudo Bonsai Planter by designer Adrian Magu is as stylish as it gets. The product is an artistic representation of the developer’s interest for everything green and his work in the automotive industry: “Referencing speed forms and manufacturing processes used in transportation design, this piece juxtaposes movement applied to what is usually a static object.” The unconventional shape and elegant black-gray silhouette makes this unconventional bonsai planter fit perfectly in modern interiors with a twist.

Other unique features of the product are highlighted by designer Adrian Magu: “The piece gives the impression of an accelerating form that effortlessly floats to house a bonsai tree, evoking a perfect balance of dynamic harmony. The latest manufacturing processes of the highly polished finishes of the planter and 3D-printed ‘mountains’ contrast to that of nature that usually takes many decades to grow, sculpt and form the gnarled bonsai forms. In all, a unique synthesis of cutting-edge precision with the imperfect beauty of nature.” Find this planter design as captivating as we do?  [Photography by Andy Beard]

Studio Nienke Hoogvliet Uses Algae Yarn To Create Sea Me Rug

Dutch Design Week 2014: this rug by Dutch designer Nienke Hoogvliet is woven from yarn made from algae to demonstrate the qualities of the natural textile .

To draw attention to this raw material, Nienke Hoogvliet knotted the algae yarn around an old fishing net to form a floor covering called Sea Me.

The yarn is created using cellulose extracted from sea algae, which is harvested from kelp seaweed in South Africa and purchased from a specialist supplier.

The cellulose has similar properties to viscose – a chemical compound used to create synthetic textiles – but creates much softer fibres, according to Hoogvliet.

“It’s spun irregularly therefore the thread is thick in some places and thin in others,” she told Dezeen. “It has an organic look.”

Viscose production is not environmentally friendly, so Hoogvliet hopes that the algae-based alternative could provide a suitable replacement.

Shades of green blend into one another across the surface of the shaggy rug, with sections of the netting left exposed around the edges.

To create the gradient effect, the yarn was dipped in paint while still wrapped around a cone so the colour gradually sept through to the wound fibres underneath.

“I mixed different types of textile paint to get the perfect green,” said Hoogvliet. “After that I dyed the whole yarn cones. A natural gradient appears through the movement of paint through the cone – the outside is darker than the inside. When taken off the cone, I used this gradient to make the gradient on the rug.”

Sea Me, which was presented at Dutch Design Week earlier this month, is Hoogvliet’s first product created through experimenting with the algae fibres.

“With this project I wanted to show what is possible with this yarn,” the designer said. “I hope many projects will follow.”

Canberra's National Arboretum Features "100 Forests From Around The World"

World Architecture Festival 2014: Australian landscape architect Perry Lethlean explains the concept behind the Canberra park named World Landscape of the Year 2014 in our next movie from World Architecture Festival.

The National Arboretum by Taylor Cullity Lethlean and Tonkin Zulaikha Greer is a regeneration project on the outskirts of Canberra, Australia, aimed at replacing trees that were destroyed during bushfires in 2003.

“Out of the bushfires there were two small plantations of forest that were left on the site: a Himalayan cedar forest and a cork oak forest,” explains Taylor Cullity Lethlean director Perry Lethlean. “We took that inspiration and asked, ‘Why don’t we have 100 forests with trees from all around the world?'”

50,000 rare and endangered species were planted throughout the 300-hectare site.

“People can enter into this arboretum and be transported to a different part of the world each time they visit,” says Lethlean. “Each time you enter a forest it’s a different experience – different flowers, different smells, different textures – according to the species that are there.”

He adds: “At a basic level it’s to remind people of the beauty of nature.”

As well as Taylor Cullity Lethlean’s landscaping, the site features a pavilion and a visitor centre designed by architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer.

“They have delivered a very striking visitor centre which sits beautifully in the topography of the setting,” says Lethlean. “It looks out onto Canberra and the arboretum and forms an orientation point for the site.”

The park also features a number of other attractions. “As well as the forests there are playgrounds, visitor gardens, artworks,” says Lethlean. “It’s a real destination for the citizens of Canberra.”

Modern Greek House Design Exploring Traditional And Up-to-Date Design

House in Kea by Marina Stassinopoulos and Konstantios Daskalakisc Modern Greek House Design Exploring Traditional and Up to Date Design

The island of Kea in Greece seemed the perfect location to settle down and enjoy magical breezes serpent among olive trees. This modern House in Kea was seen by architects Marina Stassinopoulos and Konstantios Daskalakis as an opportunity to employ the island’s traditional building practices in a modern and highly functional residence. By rearranging the site’s terracing while maintaining local flora, the architects created a modern Greek house design connecting volumes of living spaces while allowing them to be independent. A sloped site and the beautifully simple terracing allowed architects to create different courtyards and open areas integrated in the volumetric architecture and terraced landscape.

House in Kea by Marina Stassinopoulos and Konstantios Daskalakisc 1 Modern Greek House Design Exploring Traditional and Up to Date Design

With an adapted floor-plan, the home was imagined functional, cozy and inspiring: “The building is placed on a terrace. The entrance to the house is found in the void between the volume of the house and the terrace behind it. A longitudinal course, parallel with the gradient of the slope connects the distinct building volumes and three courtyards, each having different characteristics: a covered courtyard (in the heart of the building), a shaded one by the oak trees (close to the livingroom) and one exposed to the sun (at the end of the corridor). Perpendicular to the longitudinal course one enters the main areas of the building (the livingroom and the two bedrooms), which open up towards the sea. The circulation and the service spaces (entrance, corridors and bathrooms) are expressed as voids that connect the differing volumes of the primary spaces. ”

Defined by simplicity and displaying an eco-friendly nature, this modern Greek house displays its flat roof as the main facade, since the interiors are accessible from the top floor. Still, it could never compete with this unique rooftop infinity pool floating above unspoiled Greek island scenery. Photos by Yiorgis Yerolymbos present the private stone house on the island of Kea in Greece as a beacon of modern lines at night, capturing views of the awe-inspiring waters beyond.

It’s easy to imagine living in a modern Greek house like this one for anyone who ever visited Greece. This island home is the perfect hybrid between traditional and modern.

October, Home Tour And Projects

Hello and happy Halloween! I hope your forecast is better than ours! We’ll be heading out after school to get the kiddo some new long underwear for this evening. It may be a quick trip around the neighborhood tonight! 🙂

Thank you SO much for the love on our family room, not only here but on Instagram and Facebook as well. I truly, truly appreciate when you take the time to comment – it doesn’t go unnoticed!

At the end of of each month I like to recap some of my favorite posts – it’s a nice way to see what I’ve accomplished and catch you up if you missed a post. I’m definitely planning to slow my roll a bit for the rest of the year — November and December are going to be unusually busy for us. So I’m looking forward slowing down the projects…cleaning and decluttering my house and decorating for the holidays sounds amazing! I can’t not do DIY, I love it, so I’ll still be working on things here and there of course.

Before I go into the recap I wanted to share that I’ve updated the “Our Home” page – some of the photos were a bit dated and I rearranged some things too. I’ve also added a Projects tab at the top of the site that includes some of my favorite decor, projects, tips and recipes over the years. I try to update that at least every couple of weeks so there’s always new sections and links popping up.

OK – to start the month I addressed the naked windows in the dining room/library. They had shades but no drapes so I took care of that:

wall of built ins

The drapes were from our living room windows and they look SO much better in here. I still can’t believe how much warmer it feels in there – it’s a little thing but it made a big difference. I have some more updates of that room to share soon!

Next up I shared the ways I decorate our walls/fill them without using art:

wood planked wall stained

That planked wall cost me less than \$50 and it’s one of my favorite projects ever! I’m all about easy ways to add character to our home and this does it.

I’m so excited about the potential for our kitchen and thrilled with the table and it’s new spot. I had fun decorating it for a fall table setting:

simple fall table setting

Can’t wait to show you that same space with the new doors and board and batten on the walls! I think it’s going to look so good!

I did a little fall nesting throughout the rest of the house as well and warmed up the bedroom fireplace a bit:

green walls fireplace

That fireplace is one of the many things I fought my husband on hard when we built this house – and it’s now one of the many things that I now thank him for. 😉

The Bub and I took a trip to Cincinnati for a fun day and my part of the fun was IKEA. I shared a few of my favorites from the trip (including some Christmas decor):

ikea kitchen

This is my favorite kitchen at that IKEA. I walk through it every single time. 🙂

I finished up the new trim and paint on four doors in and near the family room and I LOVE it, as always:

thick door trim

Many of you asked about the signs on our bathroom door (I love them!!) and I link to where I got those in the comments of that post:

thick craftsman door trimBlack and white will always be a classic!

It has been an absolutely glorious fall this year – I shared our day trip to beautiful Brown County Indiana:

fall in Indiana

There’s still a few leaves hanging on – but the potential snow predicted this evening (!!) make take most of them.

One of my dream projects for our house has always been a window seat – and I’m finally going to get one. 🙂 🙂 So excited. I shared my inspiration for what I’d like to do in this post:

bay window window seat

(source)

If you follow along on Instagram or FB I’ve shared/will be sharing some more pics along the way. I’m really tired of painting but I may tackle the new window trim in that spot this weekend.

We only put Halloween decor out for a week or so inside the house and I shared how we do it quick and cheap here:

cheap Halloween decor

You’ll have to go to that post to see the surprise under the crows. 😉

One of the last projects I finished up in the family room was an old Craigslist dresser I painted:

black dresser brass hardware

I absolutely LOVE it in this deep gray color. By the way, I’ve been saying that paint color (Graphite) is Sherwin Williams and it’s not – duh! It’s Benjamin Moore but I had it mixed at SW. Sorry about that. 🙂

And of course, the full family room reveal happened earlier this week – finally. Goodness, we are SO happy with it!:

family room with board and battenI’ll be sharing more details about the space next week!

Have a safe Halloween and a lovely weekend!! See you Monday!
