Snøhetta Commissioned For Le Monde Headquarters In Paris

News: architecture firm Snøhetta has been named winner in a competition to design the new Paris headquarters for French newspaper Le Monde.

Oslo- and New York-based Snøhetta will work with local studio SRA on the design, which comprises a contorted building that arches up in the centre to frame a new public plaza.

The exterior will be clad with what is described as “a pixelated matrix of glass” with varying degrees of transparency, translucency, and opacity, intended to appear homogenous from a distance but more complex when viewed up close.

Since 2004 Le Monde has occupied a building designed by French architect Christian de Portzamparc, although just four years after completion it was alleged that the national newspaper was struggling to pay the rent – a reported €1 million (£766,000) per month.

No construction dates have been confirmed for Snøhetta’s building, and it is unclear what will happen to Le Monde’s existing home when the company moves into its new head office.

“The Le Monde Group is an icon in the media world, and its long-standing reputation of integrity and quality is a measure for media houses worldwide,” said Snøhetta co-founder and partner Kjetil Thorsen.

According to Thorsen, the design will focus on the relationship between the newspaper and the public, who he believes will feel a sense of ownership towards the building.

“The evolution of media is in focus and in particular the future relationship between readers and media users, the production of media on different platforms and their connection to the public at large. The Le Monde Group has chosen a generous, open and accessible model,” he said.

Thorsen also alluded to the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, which targeted employees of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, adding: “We also recognise the importance of this task in the current debates on the content of freedom of speech.”

The timing of the proposal, just two weeks after the attack on Charlie Hebdo, echoes the commissioning of the Hearst Tower in New York – the headquarters of one of America’s major media companies – shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001.

The public plaza at the centre of the building will divide the structure up into two connected halves. The first half, facing the street and the Seine, will include a visitor centre and an auditorium, while the second half, facing the railway, will feature a cafe.

The vaulted ceiling above the central plaza will be dotted with a programmable grid of LED lights, designed to represent “the transient flow of information, like clouds or stars moving across the sky”.

angel

Considering that mid December I&#8217ve slowly eased into taking a break from becoming on-line and from my operate. It was a should. If I didn&#8217t take a break, I was going to break.

2014 was the year my creativity died. It was ugly. Excellent and wonderful issues happened, but my time filled up and I didn&#8217t defend my margin. I must have taken routine breaks and since I didn&#8217t I had key, major burnout which now calls for main, key break-ing. I&#8217ll ease back into work just as slowly, but I believed it would be entertaining to share what I&#8217ve been doing, not because this is a recipe for taking a break or getting one particular&#8217s creativity back, but the opposite, I&#8217m sort of amazed at the types of items I uncover relaxing:

&nbsp

  • watching cats sleep
  • staring at the fire in the wood stove in my office for an hour (it has a window! note to self: in no way get a wood stove without a window!)
  • putting puzzles together (I did the very best a single twice!) I&#8217ve done over ten puzzles in the past month
  • cooking delicious meals
  • taking baths
  • having dirty hair for as well extended
  • reading lots of books, finishing four so far
  • cleaning  (I&#8217m sadistic and this is exciting for me&#8211but ONLY if I&#8217m alone in the residence and I have the alternative NOT to clean, otherwise it&#8217s just torture)
  • quieting the house
  • decluttering (I&#8217m providing it all away)
  • acquiring rid of clothes I don&#8217t put on (even if I love them) or garments I don&#8217t love (even if I wear them)
  • receiving rid of decor that doesn&#8217t spark joy (thanks for that push Marie Kondo)
  • becoming okay with the undone
  • not returning texts (my apologies to the great folks of the globe)
  • not answering my telephone (this is truly regular for me// #introvertsunite)
  • not returning emails in a timely manner (my apologies to the genuine grown ups of the world)
  • watching my favourite shows (let&#8217s hear it for The Legend of Mick Dodge and Alaska the Final Frontier :disclaimer, I&#8217m a boy mom)
  • giving myself permission to say no, yes and nevermind
  • consuming more genuine meals and less crap in basic, no guidelines here, absolutely nothing strict, I just want to be mindful of what goes in
  • paying interest to if I&#8217m cold, and when I am, making changes so I can be warm

Have a look at this waterfront home created by Greg Shand Architects in Singapore! With a sinuous wave envelope and wide overhangs, Nautical Lines Residence stands out against a backdrop of modern day residential units. Although one side of the home faces the ocean, the other tends to make up for lack of water views, with curved elements acting as a constant reminder of the project’s nautical character. According to the architects, “the underside of the ceiling is clad in recycled teak, reminiscent of a boat hull. Comprehensive low-e glazing affords views of the waterway to the North and South China Sea to the South.”

The walls, floor and ceiling of the bathroom kind a sinuous curved envelope clad with stainless steel, and all bathroom fixtures which includes basins, water closet’s and shower fittings echo this fluid curvaceous nautical theme.” We hope you will enjoy the architectural journey offered by this original project in Singapore.
