extending a standard island

Well HELLO! Oh pleased day, the kitchen island is done! I busted my butt yesterday painting for hours to get it completed up so I could show you this week. It is so freaking amazing, I really like it! Love it adore it enjoy it.

I’m usually proud of what I generate in our property but this one particular could be 1 of my favorites. I keep searching at it thinking, I DID THAT. And it wasn’t crazy expensive either. It is a great feeling.

If you don’t forget, last year for the duration of the family members area renovation we pulled up the island to patch the floors. I needed to move it away from the cabinets a minor bit and we had to correct the floors to do that. They had to tear it apart to consider it out of the kitchen:

And my “art” venture was created. ) The squiggles are just previous glue from previous island tasks. If you’ve followed along in excess of the years you know this tiny island has undergone a Lot of redos. This is the last one particular. I’m not touching it yet again. Ever.

I employed the unique island and built off of it – 1st by making a wine rack out of scrap wood:

I’m positive at this stage some of you had been like, uhhhh…OK…

You need to Trust! 🙂

Next came the cabinet at the end of the island that will property a microwave sooner or later:

I just developed a standard box with screws and wood.

It sat like this for a whilst – I hosted a celebration, had pals over…all with the intriguing island on show. The greatest portion of it so far was the new size and the butcher block countertop – I Enjoy possessing a bigger island. It is great my pals. I additional about two and half feet to it in complete.

Next up came the supports I built on the side:

I know some of you have mentioned that the chairs are near together – there’s actually 5 inches in between them and it’s plenty for us. I did not want to make the island any greater – that area at the finish where the table used to be has grown on us and we enjoy having it open now. (Prior to it felt enormous, so humorous.)

Also, in the eleven years we’ve lived in this house we’ve by no means had two grown grownups sit down at the island next to every other anyway (when it was just a two seater). When we have events one man or woman sits, one particular leans, and our final celebration I truly pulled a single of the seats off to the side by the new cabinet and sat there so I could talk to folks. So the spacing works fine for us – but if you try out this you will have to figure out what functions best for you!

I planked the complete thing with the identical cheap underlayment I utilised on the fireplace in the household area. And to tie to two locations collectively even a lot more I painted it the very same shade – Peppercorn by Sherwin Williams. It ties the complete room collectively superbly!: dark gray kitchen island

I’ll take you on a tour of my island. ) The cabinets were portion of the outdated island, certainly. Everything previous that is new. The wine rack is seriously great and I require to go get some more wine to fill it up. (I may possibly have celebrated with a glass last evening.)

The new cabinet at the finish will have a shelf ultimately – I will not set up that till we get the microwave that will go in right here. I’m not sure what I’ll do with the bottom shelf – for now it holds cookbooks and I adore that we have additional storage!:

I even now need to have to pick up a cover for the outlet, but otherwise the portion is carried out for now. I employed plywood for this cabinet because it is less expensive — you can see the grain of the wood but sooner or later most of it will be covered with the microwave:

Yes, our Valentine hearts are nonetheless up. )

I informed you more about the stools and how I minimize them down right here. I was initially going to hold the unique shade of our island, a lighter blue/gray, but the stools looked awful with it. So I went with the darker and I adore it!:

peppercorn gray

All of those cabinets will be created up to the ceiling and will be painted sooner or later. In the complete light like this the Peppercorn colour goes a small blue in pics but in person it’s a lot more gray. There is a definite blue undertone though.

I’ve been striving to figure out a excellent accent color to use in the kitchen — I realized in the household room and our bedroom (where I have a wall painted the identical colour) that I enjoy green with it. So green it will be…with some blue mixed in – I’m loving blue towards all the white on the new window seat:

The strategy is to take down those cabinets (the microwave will be replaced with a hood) and do shelving in that spot. I believe this view will be fairly outstanding when that’s accomplished:

I have an additional thought for that wall that came into my head the other day. I’ll have to see if it will work. That’s like phase six out of ten phases of this kitchen, so it will be awhile. 🙂

But for now we are enjoying the first two phases that have come with each other better than I could have dreamed – the window seat and the island:

The new bigger island can make me want to cook and bake all the time! I could have to make some brownies to celebrate. It is so wonderful and turned out even greater than I could have hoped.

I located this super previous image and had to share, just simply because it’s entertaining to see the modifications in excess of the years:

I’ll share a handful of a lot more specifics and how I used one of my favored equipment on this undertaking tomorrow! For now, I rest. I might just consider a nap on prime of it. 🙂
