Tamir Addadi Architecture has converted the loft of a north London residence, incorporating a staircase that also serves as a spacious bookcase .

The London studio extra a combined bedroom and research beneath the roof of the Muswell Hill home, but also integrated a staircase that connects the new room with the ground floor and doubles up as storage.

Books can be housed in individual compartments alongside the steps, which were created by the addition of shelving rails fixed among painted wooden panels.

With area at an absolute minimal – the 1st-floor landing measures just 160 centimetres broad – the conversion needed to make the most of a limited region without blocking out crucial light.

“We aimed to achieve a sense of lightness in this area, regardless of the introduction of such a big element,” Tamir Addadi stated in a statement.

A south-dealing with skylight was made and set up for the new loft room to bring in further natural light.

The slatted wooden methods and the configuration of the shelves also suggest light filters down to the reduced level.

“The airy framework of the stair-bookcase enables the all-natural light coming from this skylight to penetrate into the formerly dark spaces of the ground and first floors at the core of the home,” the studio explained.

Working to a tight budget, the steps and shelves were based mostly on a easy wooden structure that could be assembled on web site in just a handful of days.

The studio also created the most of limited room with a narrow spiral staircase for another London home, developed to give loft entry with no becoming obtrusive.

Zminkowska De Boise Architects also utilised bookshelves to connect the two halves of a split-level residing area in a renovated London flat.
