American architecture company SOM has completed work on a controversial 50-storey hotel and condominium tower on a internet site straight opposite New York’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
The mid-block developing on 53rd Street is the 1st totally new structure built for Baccarat Hotels, a division of the Starwood hotel group that is named following the 250-yr outdated luxury crystal brand.
SOM wanted to develop a restrained layout that would reflect the basic packaging employed by the crystal company to contain its more opulent items.
“It truly is a quite easy massing that contrasts with what’s within the building,” said SOM design companion Gary Haney.

“We looked at Baccarat’s packaging, which, like Hermes or Tiffany, is exceptionally lovely. It sets off what’s within,” he advised Dezeen.
Dealing with MoMA, the tower has two distinct zones. The decrease portion – which includes the 9-storey 114-room hotel – projects out in direction of the street, whilst the slimmer upper amounts residence the building’s 60 apartments.
Seventeen by thirteen foot panels of ultra-clear glass, which has an unusually low iron articles, give the apartments dramatic views of the city, like Central Park to the north and the Empire State Developing facing south.
Residences above the 16th floor have direct views down into MoMA’s Philip Johnson-created sculpture garden, 1 of the city’s most iconic outdoor spaces. “In those units, it truly feels like the garden belongs to you,” stated Haney.
The tower attributes two opaque sidewalls clad in grey zinc panels, with angled arrangements about the windows, which are punched by means of the facade.
At ground degree, the architects designed another facade treatment method with triangular glass fins laminated to a clear structural glass wall, which creates patterns with the light that filters into the interior. “It truly is each transparent and prismatic,” Haney said.
Parisian firm Gilles & Boissier created the hotel interiors in an more than-the-leading design meant to reflect the Baccarat brand’s aesthetic.
The building’s height and mid-block spot drew criticism when the strategies have been 1st unveiled, with fears that it could set a precedent that would ultimately lead to shadow-darkened side streets during Manhattan.
The project will also include a rebuilt branch for the New York Public Library, designed by Ten Arquitectos, which will open later on this yr. Largely under ground, the new library will function stepped bleacher seating that can be used for informal studying, or events and discussions.
The new facility is smaller sized than the earlier branch on the website, which was sold to raise funds for the income-strapped library technique.
SOM’s Very own Globe Trade Centre – which accepted its first tenants in November – was named as the most pricey skyscraper of all time last year.
