Andrew Blauvelt Cranbrook Art Museum

Layout curator Andrew Blauvelt has been appointed director of the Cranbrook Art Museum in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills.

Blauvelt joins the institution from the Walker Artwork Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he has worked because 1998 and presently holds the title of senior curator for design, research and publishing.

The Cranbrook Museum, portion of the Cranbrook Art Academy, is housed in an Eliel Saarinen-created developing completed in 1942 – component of the Finnish architect’s campus that he started developing in 1928. The school provides undergraduate and graduate schooling in artwork, layout, and architecture.

The studio-based college counts Eliel’s son Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Knoll between its alumni. Blauvelt graduated with a master of fine arts (MFA) in layout from the college in 1988.

He has also curated a number of exhibitions including Strangely Acquainted: Design and Each day Life, Some Assembly Necessary: Contemporary Prefabricated Houses, and Graphic Design: Now in Manufacturing. His most recent exhibition is titled Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia.

Blauvelt obtained the National Layout Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Style Museum in 2009 for Institutional and Corporate Achievement.
