The New Kitchen Table

Oh my! I am so excited about not only the new space in the family room (after taking down the wall), but the fact that we have so much more space in our kitchen as well. Because everything shifted down towards the old office our kitchen space has doubled. It is DREAMY.

A couple months back (I can’t believe it’s been that long!) I asked your thoughts on moving our table and we did end up moving it between the sectional and the kitchen island. I had the light moved over and we LOVE it this way.

Because we have way more space there compared to when it was over by the back door and pantry we were able to consider a new table for the space – I’ve always had to work with a much smaller area so this was pretty exciting for me.

I’ve spent the past two months trying to find the perfect table. I went back and forth between buying and building a table. I did a combo of both on the previous kitchen table (we are moving that one down to the basement) and this time I was considering building from scratch. I had a definite look in mind and it involved these legs:

I am obsessed with the curved look of them. I wanted to go a little more “pretty” this time (compared to the more clean lines of our previous farmhouse table). Honestly though, I just couldn’t pull the trigger and start building – sometimes when you DIY a lot you like to just BUY something. 🙂 So that’s what I started looking into next. I stalked Craigslist for solid month and almost drove three hours round trip to pick up an old table I was going to refinish. It was a basic turned leg table and I liked it…but not enough to drive that far, especially for a Craigslist table. What if it wasn’t in great shape or didn’t look like it did in the pictures?

So I started looking online but everything I liked was so expensive. It was when I was finally going back to plans of building it when I found THE ONE. I happened upon it one evening and fell in love with the shape and the legs and the size and everything…and the icing on the cake was when I noticed it came unfinished.

WHOOT! I couldn’t believe it! I never thought in a million years I’d find the table I wanted for a decent price and unfinished – I guess that’s why it cost less than others I was looking at. Most people probably want a table they don’t have to mess with. 😉 But that’s great for me because it’s an empty canvas to work with:

This table is a smidge wider than our old one and much longer – about 15 inches longer with the leaf in the middle:

unfinished kitchen table

We’ll keep the leaf in pretty much all the time – it gives us plenty of room. At the old table the chairs were closer together so this gives us space to spread out. I’m considering chairs for the ends of the table too but not sure about that just yet.

The best parts of the table are the details along the apron and the gorgeous legs:

french country table

I adore it. So beautiful. I cannot believe I found exactly what I wanted, seriously. The legs are nice and thick – the whole table is incredibly heavy – 100 percent solid wood. It’s made of rubberwood which has a similar finish and hardness to maple. The difference is the top is made in more of a butcher block look, not full planks.

I love that it’s a harder wood so it won’t be an issue when doing homework and writing out bills. Our pine-top table was softer and sometimes the writing would transfer. I was fine with it but would prefer something a little stronger. AND there are no grooves – it’s nice and smooth. I looked at so many tables that had those blasted grooves in the top!:

So now I’m trying to figure out what to do with it! I’ve always been a dark top/white leg kind of girl but I have to tell you I’m kind of loving the lighter look. I love the lighter wood against the chair color – and I don’t want dark legs that will match the floor too much: curved leg table

At first I was considering a gray wash on the top and white legs, but we already have so much gray going on in the room. It would match the chairs and the light and the built ins and the fireplace… I did wipe on some dark stain underneath and it looks SO good, but again I think I want to go a different direction with this one.

So now I’m leaning toward just waxing it or brushing on some poly to seal it. I am loving the more natural wood look right now, but I’m not sure if I’d like this bare look long term. I think it needs something – a wash perhaps?:

As it is now you can really appreciate all the curves and pretty lines on it and I feel like those stand out more in this lighter state.

Any ideas for me? It’s a blank slate but I don’t want to do anything that’s going to be a pain to sand down and redo any time soon. I do want to do something soon though – it’s making me nervous to use it without any kind of protection on it.

I’m excited about the potential! I think it’s a beauty. 🙂 Oh, by the way, I got it from Wayfair – my first purchase from there and I was really pleased with it and the delivery process. Plus free shipping!

Let me know if you’ve done a lighter or natural finish you love! I’d love tips!

12 Fall Favorites For The Home From Anthropologie

I love it when my favorite design gurus talk about what they’re loving for the season! It’s fun to peek into someone else’s shopping bag when you admire their style so much. Would you like to see my 12 favorites for Fall from Anthropologie? I don’t get to their stores much these days – they don’t have any in Germany and up until now they were only in England (but soon to open in Paris), so unless I travel there I’m rarely able to play in their fashion and interiors wonderland for adults. I do shop them online though since they have a German store, but it’s not the same as being immersed in that lush brocante chic experience that is Anthro. Oh well, I’m due a London visit soon anyway. Until then, here is my shopping list for the months ahead…

Jason's Home Office / Guest Room Model

Home Office / Guest Room

Yikes! I am behind on lots of pictures. I still haven’t shared these photos from my brother Jason’s house. There was one room in this house that was a little bit tricky to figure out exactly how to make it function. He wanted to have a space for a really simple, basic home office (the main Dear Lillie office is separate) and although it didn’t need to function as a true guest room it did need to have a mattress in here for guests (mainly me – haha!) He also didn’t want to spend very much so we tried to be keep it simple and just kind of clean it up and make it seem a little more put together.

The first thing we did was remove the saloon doors (much to the girls’ dismay) and the shelves. Once that was done we started painting. This was the neopolitan room because the walls were pink, white and tan. It looked just like a scoop of neopolitan ice cream. We painted the trim and doors with the same paint we had on hand from the rest of the house. Then we used Kendall Charcoal for the walls. We painted our master bedroom in our townhouse that color almost 6 years ago and it’s still one of my favorite colors.

We found some inexpensive roman shades at Home Depot for the windows and painted his childhood desk (I’d still like to change out the knobs but have yet to convince him that’s a necessary expense). My mom got a new rug for her guest room (I can’t wait to photograph it next time I am up there. I didn’t have time to during my last trip but it is beautiful!) and so we borrowed this one from her. We were hoping it would be perfect, but I’m not sure it looks or works quite like I thought it would so I am not sure we are going to keep it in here or not. And then we made this sign for above the bed with one of my favorite Robert Frost quotes and made the shelves. And then pretty much just used some accessories we already had and purchased a few to fill in some of the empty spaces and that was about it! It was a relatively quick and inexpensive makeover which was nice!

5 Things I Look For When Shopping For Throw Pillows

We could all use a little interiors inspiration for Autumn/Winter 2014, don’t you think? What are you planning to do to add warmth and a fresh touch to your rooms once Fall kicks in? I’m still on the fence, but I’ll definite add new drapes for my living room (I’ll share the before and after next month) and I plan to hang some art over the sofa and buy a new coffee table as I attempt to baby proof things around here since our crawler is super active and pulling himself up on everything at only 7 months old. And of course, a good throw pillow or ten! Here are some from Lauraloves, designed exclusively by Laura Nicolson in England who so nicely reached out to me today. I love the peacock silk cushion and the olivia silhouette with that chic herringbone pattern. That looks so Fallish.

Since so many of you enjoy it when I share decorating tips, here are five things I look for when I’m shopping for cushions:

1. Zippers! They need to have them so I can easily swap out the cushion covers with each season and rotate through my favorites year round without having to store bulky cushions.
2. The fillers definitely need to be down or down-like because I love a relaxed look – they can’t be overly plump – they need to be squishy
3. Natural materials… Silk is great for a glam look, cotton for a bit more of a natural, relaxed home and you can even go with texture like leather, wool, knit, etc. For spring I like cotton and linen and for cooler months I’m a lover of leather, wool, knit and nubby linen. Silk is nice for all seasons but not so much to lounge on, they’re meant to be more decorative I think and to simply sit on a sofa and look good.
4. Something fresh and trendy. I know, lots of you don’t like the word trend but honestly, I really love trends as long as I have some balance and don’t go overboard. I really enjoy wearing trends from time to time (Birks were trending this summer, did you notice? We can thank Jenna Lyons and J.Crew for that I think) and I love adding stuff to my home that is trendy because I feel it freshens the space and adds a different vibe. Sometimes I can get really same-y same-y with my interiors – I think lots of us can when we decorate for years and years – and trends pull me out of that and force me to try something I may not have attempted before. Like adding a certain color, motif or texture to my space. And cushions are perfect for adding a bit of trend into a room because they’re not that expensive and they can easily be swapped out when you tire of them, stored easily and reused later or you can donate them or sell them on eBay or your next garage sale or something. In fact, I think the easiest way to experiment with a trend is through soft furnishings, particularly cushions, as they are small enough and can be budget-friendly.
5. I need to love it. This point should have been first maybe? But yeah, I have to love it. Even something as seemingly mundane as a cushion. I need to feel a bit of excitement when I see it and when I bring it home, it needs to give the space that needed touch.
