Edgy and retro-futuristic, the 3.1 Phillip Lim resort 2017 line-up transcends what is usually regarded as a resort collection, focusing more on delivering something new rather than something that is ready to be purchased just before the spring and summer seasons.
“You usually think about pre-spring as easy-to-buy, digestible merchandise,” Lim declared backstage. ”This time I was, like, screw that. It should be about, ‘why do we need another dress?’”
One of New York’s leading fashion figures, Lim often asks himself questions before starting to design a collection, focusing thus on pieces that are functional, wearable and of course covetable too. He wants us to treat his creations as something to buy now and enjoy right away because we fancy them, not just because we need something to show off. With his collections he never fails injecting some fancy street elegance to our wardrobes, often playing with high and low combinations that are, moreover, overall quite affordable.
An accomplished tailor, Lim often states that he wants his works to speak for him, and his 3.1 Phillip Lim cruise 2017 collection surely does it, revealing his more androgynous, retro-futuristic side we have never seen before. Juxtaposition is a strong theme within the collection, and goes through the color-blocking patterns, dichotomous fabrics and specular lines and cuts.
The 3.1 Phillip Lim resort 2017 collection includes both ethereal, lightweight ensembles and more heavyweight, winter-approved pieces, which not only denote the designer’s willingness to allow us to be able to choose what to wear according to the weather and our personal tastes, but also to put the focus on the usability and style of the designs. The line-up features a rich array of double-breasted mannish jackets, suede bombers and biker jackets, not to mention the Las Vegas-inspires short-sleeved shirts that are meant to be worn upon a long-sleeved t-shirt.
More ethereal details lighten up the Seventies creations, revealing Lim’s passion for and ability to create haute couture-esque slip dresses, lingerie pieces and more sensual creations, infused with strong street-style vibes. Sensuality is seen both in the more conventionally feminine pieces, and within the great variety of mannish outfits, which range from suits to cropped waistcoats combined with biker trousers.
Knitwear plays a huge role in this collection too, working its way into elongating the figures and proving mannish cuts, ethereal lines and cozy silhouettes can be easily combined together. To top it all off, the designer managed to complete each outfit with one or more statement pieces, which inevitably remind us about his terrific attention to details.
