When we enter a room, our eye is usually drawn to a specific item or area in the space-the space’s focal point-a fireplace, painting, TV or a large picture window. If the room has one focal point, you can arrange your furniture around it to create a sense of order in the space. Decorating the room becomes more complex when it has more than one focal point.

Rooms sometimes look disorganized or messy because too many objects are attracting your attention. Carefully arranging the furniture in a room with two focal points makes the space unique and interesting. Check out the living room spaces we have created for you.

1. Alamo Square Living Room

living room layout

Melissa Lenox Design

You can always just block off the fireplace with wood or sheetrock, keeping the mantel as a focal point and design element.

2. Private Residence

piano

Andrea Schumacher Interiors

Here is another example of a piano that fits seamlessly into its surroundings. The white color plays off the sofa and painted ceiling, while the piano-size nook blends the instrument into the bookcases.

3. Austin Contemporary Living Room

neutral tones

Christen Ales Interior Design

Living Room with neutral tones, dark wood, texture, and pops of orange.

4. Black Marlin Circle

fireplace

Echelon Custom Home

Separating the television and fireplace within the same space is difficult to get right, but it’s done masterfully here. The wood paneling running up the wall and over the ceiling to surround the fireplace wall makes for a perfect integration – it almost feels as if they are on the same wall.

5. Grandin Residence

Textured brown tiles

Drawing Dept

Textured brown tile surrounds this Rumford-style fireplace, creating a clear focal point against the white walls and built-ins. While this is a functional wood-burning fireplace, the homeowners opted to skip the mess, hassle and heat of a fire and light their hearth with candles instead.

6. Jasmine 2 Living Room

furnishings

D for Design

Most of the furnishings in the residence were custom-made, such as the living room media cabinet with leather upholstered doors and nail head trim.

7. Jolly Rancher Living Room

elongated double-sided fireplace

CRFORMA Design + Build

This elongated double-sided fireplace appears to stretch from one end of the room to the other. With so much linear square footage, everyone in both rooms will get to feel the heat.

8. Market Street Penthouse Living Room

loft-like layout

Winder Gibson Architects

An interior build-out of a two-level penthouse unit in a prestigious downtown high-rise. The design emphasizes the continuity of space for a loft-like environment.

9. Minneapolis Traditional Living Room

cabinetry components

Medallion Cabinetry

Great Ideas for creating mantles and fireplace surrounds from cabinetry components.

10. Montreal, QC: Escobar

living room layout

Esther Hershcovich

Escobar designed the Macassar Ebony media wall unit so the TV would be flush with it.

11. Northwest Hills Remodel

two focal points

Laura Burton Interiors

Sometimes the best way to deal with these two focal points is to separate them. This design makes great use of an angled wall while still making it easy to enjoy the fireplace and the TV at the same time.

12. Omaha Family Room

custom-built entertainment wall

The Interior Design Firm

This family room is anchored by the custom-built entertainment wall. Incorporating hidden-electronics and display niches, the wall connects to the corner fireplace.

13. Orange County Contemporary Living Room

Multiple focal points

Todd Peddicord Designs

Multiple focal points – furniture in front of the television and we have the awesome fireplace.

14. Mountain Craftsman

leather and fabric furnitures

Aneka Interiors Inc.

I love the combination of the leather and fabric for the furniture.

15. San Francisco Family Room

moose head

Nina Jizhar Interiors

The moose head is the highlight of this living room – simple yet fancy!

16. Seattle Contemporary Living Room

different floor plan

Modwalls | Live with Color

There is a lot going on in this living room – different floor plan and the open shelving is my favorite.

17. Soape Family Room

soaring ceiling heights

Cecilia Staniec | A Darling Room

The soaring ceiling heights in some family rooms create wall space that can be intimidating to fill. Choose a nice oversized clock – it will complete the space, while adding some fabulous style.

18. Spanish Oaks Hacienda

neutral Oushak rug

Jauregui Architecture Interiors Construction

Look at the neutral Oushak rug with accents of rusts & greens.

19. Vail, CO

stone finish

Slifer Designs

I like the stone finish on the fireplace and the walls.
